The Raw Transition: How to Safely Switch Your Pet’s Diet Without the Tummy Troubles

Making the decision to switch your pet to a raw diet is one of the best choices you can make for their long-term health, energy, and overall vitality. But if you’re standing in front of your fridge wondering, “How do I actually make the switch without causing a stomach upset?”—you are definitely not alone!

Transitioning your pet’s food doesn't have to be stressful. With a simple plan and a little bit of patience, you can guide your pet into their new, natural diet smoothly and safely.

Here is everything you need to know to make the switch without the tummy troubles.

Method 1: The Gradual Transition (Best for Sensitive Tummies & Seniors)

For most dogs and cats—especially senior pets, puppies, or those with notoriously sensitive stomachs—a slow, step-by-step approach over 7 to 10 days is the gold standard.

Because processed kibble and raw food digest at different rates, blending them in the exact same meal can sometimes cause mild indigestion. Instead, we recommend keeping meals separate or gradually shifting the proportions day by day:

Days 1–3:

Serve 75% of their old diet and 25% raw food (ideally in separate meals, e.g., kibble for breakfast, raw for dinner).

Days 4–6:

Move to a 50/50 split between old food and raw food.

Days 7–9:

Shift to 25% old food and 75% raw food.

Day 10:

100% fresh, nutritious raw mealtime!

Pro-tip: Stick to one simple protein source (like poultry or beef) during the transition period. Keeping it simple helps your pet’s digestive system adapt smoothly before you start introducing exciting extras like wild game or oily fish.

Method 2: The "Cold Turkey" Fast (Best for Young, Healthy Dogs)

If you have a young, healthy dog with an iron stomach, a direct switch often works brilliantly.

Fast overnight:

Feed your dog their usual dinner, then skip breakfast the next morning (water is always available!). A brief 12 to 24-hour fast gives their digestive tract time to rest and fully clear out old processed food.

Serve raw:

Offer a full raw meal for dinner the next day.

Because dogs have naturally high stomach acidity designed to break down fresh meat quickly, many thrive with a direct, clean break from kibble to raw.

(Note: We don't recommend fasting young puppies, pregnant pets, or cats—cats should always follow a slow, gradual transition!).

What to Expect: Normal Changes vs. Red Flags

As your pet’s body detoxes from processed fillers and begins absorbing highly bioavailable nutrients, you’ll notice a few changes right away.

What’s Normal:

Smaller, firmer poop:

Raw food is packed with nutrients your pet actually uses, meaning far less waste comes out the other end! (And bonus: it’s much less smelly).

Slight stool color changes: Don't panic if poop looks a bit lighter—bone content naturally creates firmer, paler stools.

Increased water intake from food: Raw food is naturally rich in moisture, so you might notice your pet drinking slightly less from their water bowl.

What Needs Adjustment:

Mild loose stool: If their tummy gets a little too soft, slow down the transition. Drop back to the previous day’s ratio for a couple of days, or add a spoonful of pure canned pumpkin (not pie mix!) to help firm things up.

Hunger pukes (yellow bile): If your pet throws up a tiny bit of yellow foam on an empty stomach, it usually just means their digestive juices are firing up in anticipation of food. A small raw treat or splitting meals slightly closer together fixes this quickly.

3 Golden Rules for a Stress-Free Switch

1) Keep it clean: Practice standard kitchen hygiene! Wash bowls after every meal with warm, soapy water, keep raw food sealed in the fridge, and wash your hands after handling.

2) Listen to your pet: Every animal is an individual. If your dog needs 14 days to fully transition instead of 7, that is completely fine! Go at their pace.

3) Keep cool: Pets pick up on our energy. If you approach mealtime relaxed and excited, they’ll dive right in with confidence!

Ready to Take the First Step?

Switching to fresh, raw food is a journey, and you’re giving your furry best friend the ultimate gift of health. Take it one bowl at a time, trust the process, and get ready to see a shiny coat, pearly white teeth, and a very happy, tail-wagging pet at dinner time!
