Overview: The Freshwater Angelfish is arguably the most recognizable and regal icon of the tropical aquarium hobby. With their distinctive disc-shaped bodies and extraordinarily long, elegant dorsal and anal fins, they glide through the water with unmatched grace. When sold as "Assorted Colors," you are looking at a brilliant genetic mix of line-bred color strains. These include the shimmering Silver (wild type), Marble (marbled black and white), Koi (mottled orange, black, and white), Blushing (white with bright pink cheeks), and the majestic Velvet Black.
Origins: The root species is native to the massive, slow-moving river systems of the Amazon Basin in South America. They naturally inhabit quiet, dimly lit riverbanks heavily choked with fallen trees and vertical river reeds—a layout their vertically compressed bodies evolved perfectly to navigate and hide within.
Personality: Angelfish belong to the Cichlid family, which means they possess high intelligence and a big personality, but also a distinct territorial streak. While they look peaceful and serene as juveniles, they become highly organized, status-driven predators as they mature. They can form monogamous breeding pairs that will fiercely defend a chosen territory (like a large plant leaf or a piece of slate) from any and all tank mates.

Tank Size: 115 Litres minimum for a single fish or a confirmed pair. Crucial Note: The tank must be tall (at least 45–50 cm deep) to accommodate their towering vertical fin span without them scraping the substrate.

pH: 6.0 – 7.5 (They prefer soft, slightly acidic water but adapt well to neutral tap water)

Should be kept in groups? They can be kept singly, as a mated pair, or in a larger community group of 6 or more to spread out natural cichlid aggression. Avoid keeping just 3 or 4, as the dominant fish will ruthlessly pick on the weakest individual.
The "Neon Tetra" Warning: Because Angelfish are natural ambush predators, their mouths stretch much wider than you might think. A classic mistake is housing mature Angelfish with small nano fish like Neon Tetras or Guppies. To a large Angelfish, a tiny tetra isn't a friend—it's an expensive midnight snack!
