As the "coarse" stage of your filtration system, the blue sponge is your first line of defense against larger waste particles.
With a 15ppi (pores per inch) rating, this sponge features larger pores than the black or white pads. This design allows for maximum water flow while successfully trapping heavy debris before it can clog your finer filter media.

Maintenance Tip:
Because the blue sponge catches the largest debris, it often gets dirty the fastest. During your regular filter maintenance, rinse the sponge thoroughly in a bucket of aquarium water to remove sludge while keeping the "good" bacteria alive. Replace the sponge every 6–12 months or when it no longer returns to its original shape after cleaning.
