Overview: The Fantail is the definitive "gateway" fancy goldfish, beloved for its egg-shaped body and spectacular, double-forked caudal (tail) fin. When viewed from above, their tail flares out gracefully like an open folding fan. When sold as "Assorted Colors," you get a beautiful mix of color varieties: Metallic Red/Orange, Calico (a mottled mix of orange, black, and white with translucent scales), White, or Red-and-White patterns. They are significantly hardier and faster swimmers than more extreme fancy breeds (like the Lionhead or Bubble Eye), making them the perfect introduction to the world of fancy goldfish.
Origins: Goldfish were originally domesticated from wild carp in ancient China over a thousand years ago. The Fantail specifically is the foundational lineage from which nearly all modern western double-tailed "fancy" goldfish breeds were developed.
Personality: Fantails are cheerful, docile, and highly interactive. They have exceptional memory and recognition skills for fish; they will quickly learn to recognize their owners and will excitedly rush to the front glass to "beg" for food when you enter the room. They are entirely non-aggressive, social, and spend their days meticulously sifting through the bottom substrate for food or waddling playfully through the water.
Care Level: Easy
Temperament: Peaceful and highly social
Diet: Omnivore (Must be fed high-quality sinking pellets formulated for fancy goldfish, supplemented with blanched greens like peas with the skins removed. Avoid floating flakes, as fancy goldfish easily gulp in air, leading to buoyancy and swim-bladder issues).
Max Size: 15 – 20 cm
Family: Cyprinidae
Tank Size: 75 – 115 Litres for the first fish, with an additional 40 Litres for every goldfish added after that. They produce a large biological waste load and require powerful filtration.
Temperature: 18°C – 23°C (They are temperate/cold-water fish, not tropical fish. They can tolerate slight temperature swings but thrive in cooler environments).
pH: 7.0 – 8.0
Should be kept in groups? Yes. They are very social and thrive in the company of their own kind. However, you should only house them with other slow-moving fancy goldfish (like Black Moors or Ryukins). Do not house them with streamlined, single-tail goldfish (like Comets or Common Goldfish), as those faster varieties will outcompete the clumsy Fantail for food.
Myths vs. Reality: Forget the old cliché of the tiny goldfish bowl! Because of their eventual large size and the sheer amount of waste they produce, keeping a Fantail in an unfiltered bowl will quickly poison them with ammonia. A proper aquarium with a strong filter ensures they can easily live for 10 to 15 years.
