Overview: The Balloon Molly is one of the most distinctive and endearing livebearers in the hobby. It is famous for its uniquely round, swollen belly, and short, compact body, which give it an almost "pot-bellied" or balloon-like appearance. Because they are selectively bred from standard mollies, they come in a stunning kaleidoscope of assorted colors, including jet black, marble, gold dust, dalmatian, and bright orange.
Origins: The standard molly is native to coastal streams and estuaries from Mexico to Colombia. The "Balloon" mutation was developed through selective breeding in captivity to create this short, rotund shape. Like other mollies, they possess a high adaptability to varying levels of salinity and can live in freshwater, though they genuinely appreciate a touch of aquarium salt.
Personality: Balloon Mollies are social, active, and have an amusing, slightly clumsy swimming style due to their round bodies. They are peaceful and spend their time grazing on algae or "begging" for food at the glass. They are excellent community fish, though they can be quite prolific breeders if males and females are kept together!
Care Level: Easy to Intermediate
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Omnivore (Flakes, pellets, and high-quality vegetable/spirulina flakes to prevent digestion issues)
Max Size: 5 – 7.5 cm
Family: Poeciliidae
Tank Size: 115 Litres minimum (They are active and produce quite a bit of waste)
Temperature: 24°C – 28°C
pH: 7.0 – 8.2 (They love hard, alkaline water)
Should be kept in groups? Yes. They are very social shoaling fish and do best in groups of at least 3 to 5. It is best to keep more females than males (a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio) to ensure the females don't get pestered by the males.
Note on Care: Because of their shortened, compact body cavity, Balloon Mollies can sometimes be slightly more prone to swim bladder or digestive issues than regular mollies. Feeding them a high-quality, vegetable-rich diet helps keep them happy and healthy!
