Male Longfin Veiltail Betta — Assorted Colors (Betta splendens)

Overview: The Veiltail is the absolute quintessential, classic Betta that introduced millions of people to the aquarium hobby. It is easily recognized by its long, asymmetric, flowing fins that drape downward like a delicate wedding veil or silk fabric when the fish is resting. When sold as "Assorted Colors," you will find a stunning spectrum of options, ranging from solid royal blues, deep crimson reds, and vibrant turquoises, to multi-colored "Cambodian" patterns (a pale body with bright red fins).

Origins: While wild Betta splendens (native to the stagnant rice paddies, marshes, and floodplains of Thailand) have very short fins, the long, elegant Veiltail variant was selectively line-bred in the mid-20th century. Like all Bettas, they are Labyrinth fish, meaning they possess a specialized organ that allows them to breathe atmospheric air directly from the water's surface.

Personality: Male Veiltails are incredibly curious, interactive, and intelligent. They will watch you through the glass, patrol their territory constantly, and can even be trained to jump for food or swim through hoops. However, they are also fiercely territorial and aggressive toward other colorful, long-finned fish. They are proud and will instantly flare open their gills and magnificent fins if they spot their own reflection or a perceived rival.

Always use smooth silk or live plants (like Anubias or Java Fern) and use a gentle filter, like a sponge filter, so the current doesn't push your Betta around the tank.
