Overview: The Blue Emperor Tetra (also known as the Royal or Purple Emperor Tetra) is a small, regal fish known for its shimmering iridescent blue-to-purple body. It features a bold, dark horizontal stripe that runs from its snout all the way to the tail. Unlike the "Standard" Emperor Tetra, this species is slightly smaller, more slender, and possesses a small adipose fin (the tiny fin between the dorsal and the tail).
Origins: Native to the soft, tea-colored waters of the Rio Madeira basin in Brazil. They are found in slow-moving tributaries shaded by dense forest canopies, which is why they display their best colors in aquariums with dimmed lighting and dark substrates.
Personality: Blue Emperor Tetras are active, social, and generally peaceful, though they have a "big" personality for their size. Males are known for their spirited displays of dominance, "sparring" with each other to impress females by flaring their fins and intensifying their purple hues. They are less skittish than many other tetras and will spend most of their time swimming confidently in the middle layer of the tank.
Care Level: Easy
Temperament: Peaceful (Keep in schools to prevent minor fin-nipping)
Diet: Omnivore (Quality flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen foods like Daphnia or Brine Shrimp)
Max Size: 4 cm
Family: Characidae
Tank Size: 60 Litres minimum
Temperature: 23°C – 27°C
pH: 5.5 – 7.5 (Prefer slightly acidic)
Should be kept in groups? Yes. They must be kept in a group of at least 6 to 10. In smaller numbers, they can become stressed or occasionally "nippy" toward tank mates.
Did you know? You can easily tell the boys from the girls by looking at the adipose fin (the tiny one on the back). In males, this fin is blue, while in females, it is red or orange!
