Overview: The Blue Three Spot Gourami is a classic aquarium favorite, known for its beautiful silvery-blue body and two distinct black spots (one in the middle of the body and one at the base of the tail). You might be wondering why it's called "Three Spot"—the "third spot" is actually the fish's eye, which perfectly aligns with the other two! They have a sleek, oval shape and long, thread-like pelvic fins (feelers) used to sense their surroundings.
Origins: These fish are native to the slow-moving, standing waters of Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia. In the wild, they are incredibly hardy, often found in rice paddies and marshes where oxygen levels are low—thanks to their Labyrinth organ, they can simply gulp air from the surface to breathe.
Personality: Blue Gouramis are intelligent but can be quite "boisterous." While they are generally considered community fish, they have a territorial streak. Males, in particular, can be "grumpy" and may chase other gouramis or fish with long, flowing fins (like Guppies) that they perceive as rivals. They are bold, active, and will quickly learn to recognize you as the "food provider."
Care Level: Very Easy
Temperament: Semi-aggressive (Territorial toward other Gouramis)
Diet: Omnivore (Flakes, pellets, and frozen foods; they are also known to eat Hydra, making them a helpful "pest control" fish!)
Max Size: 12 – 15 cm
Family: Osphronemidae
Tank Size: 115 Litres minimum
Temperature: 22°C – 28°C
pH: 6.0 – 8.0 (Very adaptable)
Should be kept in groups? They can be kept singly or in a "harem" (one male to two or more females). Avoid keeping two males in the same tank unless it is very large (200+ Litres), as they will fight over territory.
Did you know? The popular Opaline Gourami and Gold Gourami are actually just color variations of this exact same species!
