Overview: The Borneo Sucker, also known as the hillstream loach, is a fascinating and unique freshwater fish. Its flattened body, large pectoral and pelvic fins, and sucker-like mouth are adaptations for its native environment—fast-flowing, oxygen-rich streams. The coloration and patterns vary, but many have a beautiful marbled or spotted appearance, making them a visually interesting addition to a specialized aquarium.
Origins: These fish originate from the fast-flowing, clear rivers and streams of Borneo, particularly in Malaysia and Indonesia. They are found in high-oxygen environments with rocky substrates, where they use their specialized fins to cling to surfaces against the strong current.
Personality: Borneo Suckers are generally peaceful and shy. They are bottom-dwellers and spend most of their time clinging to rocks, glass, or other smooth surfaces, "grazing" on algae and biofilm. They are not highly active swimmers in the traditional sense, but their unique movements and ability to navigate strong currents are captivating to watch. They are best kept in a species-only tank or with other peaceful fish that can tolerate similar water conditions.
