The Bronze Corydoras (scientific name: Corydoras aeneus) is one of the most popular and widely recognized species of armored catfish in the aquarium hobby. Native to a vast range across South America, found in various habitats from clear streams to murky rivers and floodplains, their adaptability and peaceful nature have made them a staple for community tanks worldwide. They are commonly known as Bronze Cory, Green Cory, or Bronze Catfish.
These charming fish typically have a metallic bronze or greenish sheen over their armored bodies, with a lighter underside. They possess distinctive barbels (whisker-like sensory organs) around their mouths, which they use to forage for food in the substrate. Bronze Corydoras are highly social and active bottom-dwellers, constantly sifting through the substrate, making them efficient tank clean-up crew members (though they should never be relied upon as the only clean-up crew). Their inquisitive nature and schooling behavior add constant, subtle movement to the lower levels of the aquarium.
Bronze Corydoras are extremely hardy and forgiving, making them an excellent choice for beginners. Their robust nature and tolerance for a range of water conditions contribute to their ease of care, provided their basic needs for schooling and substrate are met.
Bronze Corydoras are renowned for their peaceful and sociable nature. They are quintessential community fish that thrive in the company of their own kind. It is highly recommended to keep them in groups of at least 6 individuals, but larger schools are even better for their well-being and to observe their natural behaviors.
They are compatible with most other peaceful, similarly sized community fish that occupy the mid to upper levels of the water column. Good tank mates include:
Avoid aggressive or overly boisterous tank mates that might outcompete them for food or stress them.
Bronze Corydoras are omnivores and primarily bottom-feeders. They will readily accept a variety of sinking foods. It's crucial to ensure food reaches the bottom where they can find it, as they won't typically swim to the surface to eat.
Bronze Corydoras remain relatively small, typically reaching about 6-7.5 cm (2.5-3 inches) in length. This modest size makes them suitable for a variety of aquarium sizes.
While small, their schooling behavior means they need adequate space to swim and explore as a group. A 60-liter tank is a good minimum for a small school. For larger schools or a more diverse community tank, a 90-liter (20-25 US Gallons) or larger aquarium is highly recommended. The tank should have plenty of open substrate area for foraging, along with some hiding spots created by driftwood, caves, or live plants. Live plants are also beneficial for overall water quality and provide additional surfaces for foraging.
