Overview: The Forktail Rainbow is a high-energy, vibrant "nano" fish that brings a splash of electric yellow to the upper layers of an aquarium. It is famous for its deeply forked tail (hence the name) and its bright blue eyes. Males are particularly stunning, with two upward-pointing pectoral fins that resemble tiny yellow wings and bold black-and-yellow markings on their elongated dorsal and anal fins.
Origins: Native to the lowlands of eastern Papua New Guinea. They are typically found in clear, fast-flowing rainforest streams with dense vegetation, which is why they are such powerful and active swimmers compared to other Blue Eye species.
Personality: These are the "extroverts" of the Rainbowfish world. They are incredibly active, fast-moving, and playful. Males are constantly displaying to one another in a non-aggressive "sparring" dance, zipping through the water with their yellow fins flared. They are peaceful toward other species but their high energy levels might startle very slow-moving or shy tank mates.
Care Level: Easy to Intermediate
Temperament: Peaceful and High-Energy
Diet: Omnivore (Small flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen treats like cyclops or baby brine shrimp)
Max Size: 5 – 6 cm
Family: Pseudomugilidae
Tank Size: 60 – 80 Litres minimum (They need length to zoom!)
Temperature: 24°C – 28°C
pH: 7.0 – 8.0 (They prefer slightly harder, alkaline water)
Should be kept in groups? Yes. They are shoaling fish and must be kept in a group of at least 6 to 10. They are much happier and display better colors when they have a large social group to interact with.
Pro Tip: Because they are such active swimmers, they require well-oxygenated water. A slightly stronger filter flow or the addition of an air stone will help mimic their natural stream habitat and keep them in peak condition.
