Overview: Gertrude’s Blue Eye is a tiny, exquisite "nano" fish that looks like a living work of art. They are famous for their glowing, electric-blue eyes and their spectacular, delicate fins. The males are especially striking, featuring oversized dorsal and pelvic fins covered in intricate black spots and yellow-to-white edging. Their bodies are semi-translucent with a subtle honeycomb pattern, making them a favorite for high-end planted aquariums.
Origins: These fish are native to Northern Australia and Southern New Guinea. They live in shallow, heavily vegetated rainforest streams, swamps, and billabongs, often where there is plenty of leaf litter and woody debris.
Personality: Gertrude's Blue Eyes are peaceful, active, and fascinating to watch. The males spend a great deal of time "sparring" with one another—which isn't aggressive, but rather a beautiful dance where they flare their large fins like tiny fans to impress females. They are social and feel much more comfortable in a larger group, where their natural behaviors truly shine.
Care Level: Intermediate (Sensitive to water quality)
Temperament: Peaceful and Playful
Diet: Omnivore (Must have very small food: crushed flakes, micro-pellets, and tiny live/frozen foods like baby brine shrimp or daphnia)
Max Size: 3 – 3.8 cm
Family: Pseudomugilidae
Tank Size: 40 – 60 Litres minimum
Temperature: 24°C – 28°C
pH: 6.0 – 7.5
Should be kept in groups? Yes. They are shoaling fish and should be kept in a group of at least 8 to 10. Keeping a higher ratio of females to males (e.g., 2 females for every 1 male) will reduce stress and keep the males busy displaying their colors.
Pro Tip: These fish look best in a "blackwater" style setup or a heavily planted tank. Floating plants like Amazon Frogbit are highly recommended, as they love to swim and display among the trailing roots.
