The Glowlight Danio (Danio choprae, formerly Brachydanio choprai) is a captivating and relatively recent addition to the aquarium hobby, originating from the Irrawaddy River Basin in Northern Myanmar (Burma). This small, slender-bodied fish is named for the iridescent, glowing stripe that runs along its flanks, often displaying radiant shades of green, gold, red, and turquoise, depending on lighting and the fish's mood.
Glowlight Danios are known for their active, schooling nature and their ability to add a dynamic splash of color and movement to the mid to upper levels of the aquarium. Despite their energetic behavior, they are generally peaceful, making them an excellent choice for well-planned community tanks.
Glowlight Danios are considered easy to care for, making them suitable for beginners and experienced aquarists alike. They are quite hardy and adaptable to a range of water conditions, provided their need for stable parameters and schooling is met.
Glowlight Danios are highly peaceful and thrive in groups. They are a schooling species and feel most secure and display their best colors when kept in groups of at least 6-8 individuals, with larger schools being even more beneficial. When kept in insufficient numbers, they can become shy and stressed, or even nip fins of slower-moving fish due to nervousness.
They are excellent candidates for a community tank and can be safely housed with other peaceful, similarly sized fish that are not overly boisterous or fin-nippers themselves. Good tank mates include:
Avoid housing them with large, aggressive fish that might view them as prey, or with fish that have long, flowing fins, as Danios can be opportunistic fin-nippers when stressed or in too small a group.
Glowlight Danios are omnivores with a preference for small meaty foods in their natural habitat (micropredators). They are not picky eaters in the aquarium and will readily accept a varied diet:
Feed small amounts 1-2 times daily, only what they can consume within a few minutes.
Glowlight Danios are a truly diminutive species, rarely exceeding 3.5 cm (about 1.4 inches) in length. Their small size makes them ideal for smaller community tanks.
Despite their very small size, their active swimming style and strong schooling instinct mean they need adequate horizontal swimming space. A 40-liter tank is a good minimum for a small school, providing enough room for them to dart around. For larger schools or a more diverse community setup, a 60-liter (15 US Gallons) or larger aquarium is highly recommended. The tank should be well-planted with both open swimming areas and plenty of dense vegetation or driftwood for them to feel secure and display their best colors. A tight-fitting lid is essential as they are known jumpers, especially when startled or excited.
