Overview: The "Gold" Rainbow Shark is actually an albino color morph of the standard Rainbow Shark. It is a striking fish with a creamy, "butter-to-pearl" white body and vibrant red or orange fins. Because it is an albino, it also features distinctive red eyes. While it looks delicate, it has the same sleek, powerful body shape as its darker cousins and is just as active.
Origins: The base species is native to the river basins of Southeast Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos). The Gold/Albino variety is specifically bred in commercial fish farms for the aquarium trade to provide a bright, high-contrast alternative to the dark gray wild type.
Personality: Gold Rainbow Sharks are energetic and territorial. Interestingly, many hobbyists find the Albino variety to be slightly more "chill" than the standard Rainbow Shark. This may be due to their slightly poorer eyesight (a common trait in albinos), which makes them less likely to spot and chase tank mates from across the tank. However, they are still very protective of their "home" cave and will chase away any intruders.
Care Level: Easy to Intermediate
Temperament: Semi-aggressive (Territorial bottom-dweller)
Diet: Omnivore (Algae wafers, sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach)
Max Size: 15 cm
Family: Cyprinidae
Tank Size: 190 – 210 Litres minimum (Length is key!)
Temperature: 24°C – 28°C
pH: 6.5 – 7.5
Should be kept in groups? No. Just like the standard variety, they should be kept singly. They are extremely aggressive toward their own kind and other shark-like fish.
Pro Tip: To make a Gold Rainbow Shark truly stand out, use a dark substrate (black sand or gravel). The contrast between their pale bodies and the dark floor is visually stunning. Always provide at least one dedicated cave or PVC pipe for them to claim as their territory.
