Assorted Gouramis are among the most popular and vibrant centerpieces for the freshwater aquarium. Sold under the "assorted" label, these mixes typically include several selectively bred color morphs of the Trichopodus species—such as Gold, Opaline, Three-Spot, Blue, and Pearl Gouramis. They are widely recognized for their distinct, elongated pelvic fins that look like thin feelers and their graceful, slow-moving swimming style.
Gouramis are native to Asia, with wild species distributed across slow-moving freshwater habitats in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Myanmar. They naturally inhabit shallow, heavily vegetated, warm waters such as swamps, marshes, streams, and rice paddies.
Generally calm and deliberate in their movements, Gouramis make peaceful additions to a community aquarium. However, male Gouramis can display territorial tendencies toward each other or toward fish of similar shapes and sizes. They are slow-swimming, curious surface-dwellers that will frequently explore live plants and use their feeler fins to touch obstacles, tankmates, and decor.
Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Temperament: Semi-aggressive to Peaceful (Peaceful toward other non-aggressive species, but males can be territorial with each other)
Diet: Omnivorous (Thrives on high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, freeze-dried bloodworms, brine shrimp, and occasional blanched vegetable matter)
Max Size: 10 – 15 cm (varies depending on specific variety; dwarf types grow up to 8 cm, while standard species reach 12–15 cm)
Family: Osphronemidae
Tank Size: Minimum 110 litres for a pair or small group; larger species benefit from 150+ litres
Temperature: 22°C – 28°C
pH: 6.0 – 7.5
Group Requirements: Optional. Gouramis do not require schooling groups to thrive and do very well when kept singly or as a mated male-female pair. If keeping multiple Gouramis together, maintain a ratio of 1 male to 2 or 3 females in a well-planted aquarium (110+ litres) to disperse territorial aggression. Avoid keeping multiple males together in small tanks.
Gouramis are labyrinth fish, meaning they possess a specialized organ that functions like a lung. This allows them to surface and breathe atmospheric air directly! Because of this, always leave a few inches of open airspace between the top of the water level and your aquarium lid so they can comfortably surface to breathe.
