Overview: The Halfmoon Betta is widely considered the "supermodel" of the Betta world. It is named for its spectacular caudal (tail) fin, which, when fully flared, forms a perfect 180-degree semi-circle, resembling a half-moon. This variety is the result of years of dedicated selective breeding for fin symmetry and length. Because their fins are so large and heavy, they move with a regal, flowing grace that is unmatched by other Betta types.
Origins: Bettas are native to the shallow rice paddies and stagnant floodplains of Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. The "Halfmoon" trait specifically was perfected by European and American breeders in the late 1980s.
Personality: Halfmoon Bettas are intelligent and highly territorial. Because of their heavy finnage, they tend to be slightly more relaxed and less aggressive swimmers than short-finned varieties like the Plakat, simply because it takes more energy for them to move! They love resting on broad plant leaves (often called "Betta hammocks") and are very responsive to their owners, often "dancing" at the glass when it’s feeding time.
Care Level: Easy to Intermediate (Due to fin maintenance)
Temperament: Highly Territorial (Solitary)
Diet: Carnivore (High-protein Betta pellets, frozen bloodworms, and brine shrimp)
Max Size: 6 – 7.5 cm
Family: Osphronemidae
Tank Size: 20 Litres minimum (38 Litres is much better for stability)
Temperature: 24°C – 28°C — A heater is non-negotiable!
pH: 6.5 – 7.5
Should be kept in groups? No. Males must live alone. They will fight other males to the death and can be nipped at by other community fish who find their long fins too tempting.
Pro Tip: Because their fins are so delicate, you must avoid sharp plastic plants or rough decor. Stick to silk plants or live plants (like Anubias or Java Fern) to prevent fin tearing.
