Overview: The Kyathit Striped Danio (also famously known as the Orange-Finned Danio) is a gorgeous, premium relative of the classic Zebra Danio. While it shares the same high-energy, torpedo-shaped profile, its coloration is far more dramatic. It features 5 to 7 dark copper-to-blue horizontal stripes that overlay a rich, shimmering golden-bronze body. Its true defining feature is its finsâthe dorsal, anal, and tail fins light up with a vibrant, fiery orange-red glow, especially on dominant males when they are showing off.
A Quick Name Clarification: The word "Kyathit" means "leopard" in Burmese, which originally referred to the spotted version of this fish. For a long time, the spotted and striped versions were grouped together under Danio kyathit. Recently, taxonomists split them, officially naming this beautifully striped form Danio quagga, though it is still widely sold under its original Kyathit label.
Origins: They are native to the pristine, fast-flowing forest streams and rivers of the upper Irrawaddy River drainage in Northern Myanmar (Burma). They live in highly oxygenated, cool waters that flow down from the mountains.
Personality: Like most danios, the Kyathit Striped Danio is a hyperactive ball of energy. They are peaceful but lightning-fast, non-stop swimmers that spend 100% of daylight hours darting back and forth across the upper and middle layers of the water column. They are incredibly playful, completely harmless to other fish, and make exceptional dither fishâtheir bold, confident swimming style signals to shyer fish that it is safe to come out into the open.

Should be kept in groups? Yes, strictly. They are tight-schooling fish and must be kept in a group of at least 6 to 8 (10+ is ideal). If their school is too small, they become incredibly nervous and skittish.

In the wild, they use their powerful tails to leap out of the water to catch flying insects or escape predators.
