Overview: The Lionhead is one of the oldest and most classic types of "fancy" goldfish. It is famous for its distinctive wen—a fleshy, bumpy head growth that resembles a lion’s mane. As the fish matures, this growth completely covers its head, cheeks, and gill plates. Lionheads have an egg-shaped, short body and a double caudal (tail) fin, but their most distinguishing structural feature is that they completely lack a dorsal fin on their backs.
Origins:This breed was meticulously developed in China during the 1600s, where it was selectively bred to mimic the appearance of mythical Chinese guardian lions. It later became the genetic precursor to the popular Japanese Ranchu goldfish.
Personality: Lionheads are gentle, slow-moving, and docile. Because they lack a dorsal fin and have heavy, compact bodies, they are clumsy, slow swimmers. They are highly social and thrive in the company of other slow-moving fancy goldfish. They have zero aggression and spend their days waddling through the water and shifting through the gravel looking for food.
Care Level: Intermediate (Due to specialized physical traits and waste output)
Temperament: Peaceful and slow-moving
Diet: Omnivore (High-quality sinking pellets formulated for fancy goldfish, blanched peas with the skins removed, and gel foods. Avoid floating flakes, as gulping air can induce swim bladder issues).
Max Size: 15 – 20 cm
Family: Cyprinidae
Tank Size: 75 – 115 Litres for the first fish, with an extra 40 Litres for each additional goldfish. They require massive filtration!
Temperature: 18°C – 23°C (They prefer cooler temperate water, not tropical heat)
pH: 7.0 – 8.0
Should be kept in groups? Yes. They are very social and do best with other fancy goldfish. However, never house them with fast, streamlined single-tail goldfish (like Comets or Commons), as those faster fish will eat all the food and leave the slow Lionhead to starve.
