Overview:
The Moonlight Gourami is arguably the most elegant member of the gourami family. It gets its name from its iridescent, solid silvery-white body that glows with a soft, greenish-blue hue under proper aquarium lighting, mimicking moonlight. Their scales are incredibly small and tightly packed, giving them a completely smooth, silk-like texture. Unlike the bold patterns of Three-Spot or Pearl Gouramis, the Moonlight relies on pure, minimalist sophistication.
Origins:
They are native to the warm, sluggish waters, flooded forests, and swampy areas of Indochina, primarily within the Mekong and Chao Phraya river basins (spanning Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam). Because their natural habitats are heavily choked with aquatic vegetation and can become very low in oxygen, they rely heavily on their Labyrinth organ to breathe fresh air right at the water's surface.
Personality:
Compared to the sometimes "bossy" Blue or Platinum Gouramis, Moonlights are notably gentler and more timid. They are peaceful, slow-moving fish that can easily get startled by fast, aggressive tank mates. They love exploring every corner of the tank using their exceptionally long, thread-like pelvic "feelers" to touch plants and decorations.
Care Level: Easy
Temperament: Peaceful (Much more docile than other medium gouramis)
Diet: Omnivore (Appreciates standard flakes, pellets, and regularly benefits from frozen or live brine shrimp and daphnia)
Max Size: 13 â 15 cm
Family: Osphronemidae
Tank Size: 115 â 150 Litres minimum (While peaceful, they grow fairly large and need open swimming space)
Temperature: 24°C â 28°C
pH: 6.0 â 7.5 (Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water)
Should be kept in groups? They can be kept singly, in a male-female pair, or in a small harem (one male with multiple females). While males are generally much calmer than other species, they can still bicker if crowded into a tank without enough visual barriers.
Pro Tip: Because Moonlight Gouramis are naturally shy, a heavily planted tank with floating vegetation (like Duckweed or Frogbit) is crucial. Dimmed, filtered light makes them feel safe, which prompts them to display a much richer iridescent glow rather than turning a stressed, washed-out grey.
