Bring a splash of lively color and peaceful charm to your aquarium with the White Cloud Mountain Minnow! Once known as "the working man's neon tetra," this small, beautiful fish is an excellent choice for beginner aquarists due to its hardiness and tolerance for a wide range of conditions. With its striking silver-green body, a prominent white horizontal stripe, and bright reddish fins, the Mountain Minnow adds a stunning visual dynamic to any tank.
The White Cloud is a peaceful, social, and active shoaling fish that thrives in a community aquarium. It's a fantastic fish for those looking to enjoy all the personality and color of many tropical species, but with the added benefit of being a cool-water fish, making it a great choice for unheated aquariums in many homes.
Tank Size: White Cloud Mountain Minnows are active swimmers and should be kept in a group of at least six. A minimum tank size of 10 gallons (around 45 litres) is recommended for a small shoal.
Water Parameters: These fish are very hardy and can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, but they thrive best in cooler waters between 18-22°C (64-72°F). Consistent temperatures are key, as they are sensitive to heat.
pH: 6.0 to 8.0.
Hardness: 5 to 19 dGH.
Water Quality: They are sensitive to poor water quality. Ensure you have an established, cycled tank with zero ammonia and nitrite levels. Perform a partial water change of at least 15-25% weekly, and always use a tap water conditioner to remove chlorine and chloramine. Avoid any medications containing copper, as minnows have zero tolerance for it.
Diet: White Cloud Mountain Minnows are omnivores and are not considered picky eaters. Feed them a good quality flake or small granules once a day, in a quantity they can consume in a few minutes. They will also benefit greatly from occasional live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and small bloodworms.
Tank Setup:
Substrate: They are not particular, and enjoy a variety of substrates including sand, gravel, or pebbles.
Decorations: Provide plenty of live plants (they are plant-safe!), driftwood, rocks, and caves to offer cover and hiding places. Leave an open area in the middle of the tank for free swimming.
Lighting: They appreciate subtly lit tanks, which helps their colors pop. An adjustable LED light is a great option.
Scientific Name: Tanichthys albonubes
Origin: White Cloud Mountains, China
Social Behavior: Peaceful, sociable shoaling fish.
Minimum Group Size: 6 or more.
Tank Level: Occupy the top and middle levels of the tank.
Maximum Size: 4cm (1.6 inches).
Lifespan: Can live for five years or longer with proper care.
Breeding: Easy to breed, considered a good starter fish for beginner breeders. They are egg scatterers and are not overly aggressive about eating their eggs or fry.
