The Orange Finned Danio (Danio kyathit) is an active, vibrant addition to the freshwater community aquarium. Highly sought after for its shimmering metallic sheen and fiery orange-tinted fins, this species comes in two main patterns: a spotted form and a striped form. They are continuous, energetic swimmers that inhabit the upper and middle levels of the water column, bringing constant life and color to planted setup designs.
This species is native to Southeast Asia, specifically endemic to the northern stream systems of Myanmar (Burma), including tributaries of the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River basin. In the wild, they thrive in clear, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing streams and small rivers with shaded overhead canopy and pebble-to-sandy substrates.
Bright, peaceful, and extraordinarily lively, the Orange Finned Danio is a schooling fish through and through. They are non-aggressive, making them ideal companions for other peaceful, active community species. While males may engage in high-speed, harmless sparring displays to establish hierarchy within the school, they are entirely harmless to tank mates.
Care Level: Easy
Temperament: Peaceful and active
Diet: Omnivore (eagerly accepts high-quality micro-pellets, flake foods, and small live or frozen foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms)
Max Size: 4.5 â 5 cm
Family: Danionidae
Tank Size: Minimum 75 litres (prefer long tanks over tall ones to accommodate their active swimming habits)
Temperature: 16°C â 24°C (prefers slightly cooler water)
pH: 6.5 â 7.5
Group Requirements: Yes, MUST be kept in groups. They should be housed in a minimum group of 6 to 8 individuals, though a school of 10 or more will produce far bolder behavior and richer coloration.
Pro Tip: Orange Finned Danios are exceptional jumpers! Because they inhabit clear surface waters in the wild, they will easily launch themselves out of an open tank if startled. Always ensure your aquarium has a tight-fitting lid or cover glass with no gaps.
