Overview: The Pearl Danio is a shimmering, iridescent gem of the freshwater aquarium. While it might look like a simple silvery fish under the dull lighting of a pet shop tank, once settled into a well-planted home aquarium, it transforms completely. Its sleek, streamlined body reflects a magnificent, mother-of-pearl opalescence, glowing with shifting pastel shades of violet, sky blue, pink, and soft gold as it catches the light. A subtle, warm golden-orange stripe often runs along the rear half of its body to the tail.

Origins: They are native to the clean, fast-flowing, and highly oxygenated hill streams, rivers, and flooded fields of Southeast Asia, ranging widely across Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula.

Personality: Pearl Danios are hyperactive, incredibly playful, and non-stop swimmers. They are quintessential top-to-midwater dwellers, spending every daylight hour darting back and forth in rapid, playful bursts. They are completely peaceful and harbor zero malice toward other fish, but their lightning-fast, high-energy lifestyle can occasionally unnerve very slow or timid tank mates.

Should be kept in groups? Yes, strictly. They are tight-schooling fish and must be kept in a group of at least 6 to 8 (10+ is ideal). Housed in a large group, they gain immense confidence, display much tighter schooling coordination, and flash their iridescent colors far more intensely.

⚠️ Two Crucial Rules for Pearl Danios:

1. The Sealed Vault Lid: Pearl Danios are elite, world-class jumpers. In the wild, they routinely leap out of the water to catch flying insects or clear small rapids. If your aquarium has even a small gap around a filter pipe or a loose flap on the lid, they will eventually find it. A completely tight-fitting, secure lid is non-negotiable.

2. The Current Lovers: Because they evolved in rushing hill streams, they thoroughly enjoy a distinct water current. Positioning your filter output to create a gentle horizontal flow across the top of the tank will see your Pearl Danios happily "surfing" and swimming against the current for hours on end.
