Platinum Gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus variant)
This fish is a breathtaking "ghost-white" version of the Opaline or Three-Spot Gourami. Its scales have a high-metallic sheen that reflects light, making it appear as if it’s made of polished silver or platinum. They are Labyrinth fish, meaning they have a lung-like organ that allows them to breathe air directly from the surface—a handy trick for surviving in low-oxygen waters!
Origins: While the base species is native to the slow-moving, heavily vegetated canals and rice paddies of Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia), the Platinum variety is a specialized line-bred color morph developed for the aquarium hobby.
Personality: Platinum Gouramis are intelligent and inquisitive. They are generally peaceful but possess a "big fish" personality. Males can be territorial toward other gouramis, often using their "feelers" to poke and prod at tank mates to establish dominance. They are bold enough to recognize their owners and will often hover at the surface in anticipation of food.
Care Level: Easy
Temperament: Semi-peaceful (Can be bossy with other Gouramis)
Diet: Omnivore (Quality flakes, pellets, and frozen treats like Bloodworms)
Max Size: 12 – 15 cm
Family: Osphronemidae
Tank Size: 115 – 150 Litres minimum
Temperature: 22°C – 28°C
pH: 6.0 – 8.0 (Very adaptable to different water types)
Should be kept in groups? They can be kept alone, in a male-female pair, or in a large "harem" (one male to several females). Avoid keeping two males in a smaller tank, as they will likely bicker over territory.
Note: Because they breathe from the surface, make sure there is a gap of air between the water level and your aquarium lid!
