Overview: Commonly known as the X-Ray Tetra or Goldfinch Tetra, the Pristella Tetra is a highly popular and exceptionally hardy community fish. It gets its "X-ray" nickname from its translucent, yellowish-silver body, which allows you to see its internal backbone and organs quite clearly. However, its most striking feature is its fins: the dorsal and anal fins boast high-contrast bands of striking yellow, jet black, and stark white tips, while the tail fin is a contrasting reddish-pink.
Origins: They are native to South America, specifically the Amazon and Orinoco river basins, as well as coastal rivers in Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. In the wild, they are highly adaptable and are found in both clean freshwater streams and brackish, slightly salty savanna pools.
Personality: Pristella Tetras are peaceful, energetic, and incredibly resilient. They are classic shoaling fish that move in tight, orderly groups through the middle layers of the aquarium. They are bold, not easily startled, and make fantastic "dither fish" to help bring shyer species out of hiding.

Should be kept in groups? Yes. They must be kept in a school of at least 6 to 8 individuals. In a proper group, they feel secure, show off tighter schooling behavior, and display much more vibrant fin coloration.
Fun Fact: Because the Pristella Tetra is so naturally resilient to water fluctuations, it has been a staple of the aquarium hobby for nearly a century and is often recommended as an ideal choice for beginner aquarists completing their first tank cycle.
