Overview: The Purple Harlequin Rasbora is a striking color morph of the classic Harlequin Rasbora. While the standard version has a copper-orange body, the Purple variant features a much deeper, saturated violet or dark blue-black coloration that extends further across its body. This "purple" effect is often a result of the black "wedge" marking being larger and more intense, reflecting light with a metallic purple sheen. Against a backdrop of green plants, they are absolute showstoppers.
Origins: Like the standard Harlequin, the base species is native to Southeast Asia (Thailand, Malaysia, and Sumatra). The Purple variety is a specialized strain bred in the aquarium trade to maximize the dark, iridescent pigments while maintaining the hardy nature of the original fish.
Personality: These are quintessential schooling fish—peaceful, active, and social. They spend most of their time in the middle and upper layers of the water column. When kept in a proper group, they exhibit tight, synchronized swimming patterns. They are quite bold and less skittish than many other small rasboras, especially once they have settled into a well-planted environment.
Care Level: Very Easy
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Omnivore (Quality flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen foods like Daphnia or Brine Shrimp)
Max Size: 4 – 5 cm
Family: Cyprinidae
Tank Size: 60 Litres minimum (to allow for proper schooling space)
Temperature: 22°C – 28°C
pH: 6.0 – 7.5 (Prefer slightly acidic to neutral)
Should be kept in groups? Yes. They are shoaling fish and must be kept in a group of at least 8 to 10. In smaller numbers, they will feel insecure, hide more often, and their vibrant purple colors may fade due to stress.
Pro Tip: To really make their purple "pop," use a dark substrate and plenty of live plants. The contrast between the deep purple fish and the bright green foliage is one of the best looks in the hobby.
