Overview: The Rainbow Shark is a sleek, athletic fish that looks like a miniature freshwater shark. It is easily identified by its dark, charcoal-to-deep-bronze body and its vibrant, fiery red fins. Unlike the Redtail Shark (which only has a red tail), the Rainbow Shark features red on its dorsal, anal, pelvic, and caudal fins. When healthy and comfortable, their body takes on a velvety black sheen that makes the red fins pop.
Origins: Native to the Mekong, Chao Phraya, and Maeklong river basins in Southeast Asia. They inhabit rivers with sandy or rocky bottoms and are known to migrate into flooded forest areas during the monsoon season.
Personality: Rainbow Sharks are the "bosses" of the bottom of the tank. They are incredibly active, constantly scavenging for food and grazing on algae. While they are peaceful toward fish that stay in the upper layers (like Gouramis or Tetras), they are highly territorial toward other bottom-dwellers. They are also famous "escape artists," so a tight-fitting lid is mandatory.
Care Level: Easy to Intermediate
Temperament: Semi-aggressive (Very territorial with other bottom-dwellers)
Diet: Omnivore (Algae wafers, sinking pellets, and frozen foods like bloodworms; they are great at cleaning up leftover food)
Max Size: 15 cm
Family: Cyprinidae
Tank Size: 190 – 210 Litres minimum (They need a lot of horizontal swimming space)
Temperature: 24°C – 28°C
pH: 6.5 – 7.5
Should be kept in groups? No. They must be kept singly. They are extremely intolerant of their own kind and will fight other "sharks" or similar-looking fish (like Flying Foxes) relentlessly.
Fun Fact: If you notice your Rainbow Shark's color turning pale or grey, it's often a sign of stress, poor water quality, or that they are being "bullied" by a larger tank mate. A happy shark is a dark shark!
