Is your planted freshwater aquarium showing signs of dull, yellowing new leaves and stunted growth? These are classic indicators of iron deficiency, a common challenge in aquatic gardening, as iron is immobile in plants – meaning new growth suffers first. The solution is here: Seachem Flourish Iron™, a highly concentrated (10,000 mg/L) ferrous iron gluconate supplement, scientifically formulated to deliver superior, readily available iron to your aquatic plants.
When choosing an iron supplement, understanding the distinction between ferrous (Fe+2) and ferric (Fe+3) iron is crucial. Ferrous iron is soluble and preferred by plants at any pH. Ferric iron, however, becomes insoluble and precipitates at pH levels above approximately 5.5 – a common range in planted aquariums. Once precipitated, it settles in the root zone, making foliar absorption impossible.
Many competing products try to overcome this by using a chelate of ferric iron, often iron-EDTA. While this keeps the iron soluble, it presents two key drawbacks for plants:
Strong Bonding: The iron-EDTA bond is extremely strong, meaning very little iron is truly available to your plants over time.
Energy Expenditure: Plants must expend precious physiological energy to extract ferric iron from the chelate and then convert (reduce) it to the usable ferrous form.
Our approach with Flourish Iron™ is fundamentally different. We utilize a complex (not a chelate) of ferrous iron gluconate. Because this iron is already in the preferred ferrous form, your plants can much more easily derive a benefit from it, without expending valuable energy on conversion. Despite what other manufacturers may suggest, gluconate is perfectly safe and beneficial to plants and fish. In fact, ferrous gluconate is actually better suited to foliar feeding than iron-EDTA due to its weaker iron-gluconate bonding, ensuring higher bioavailability. As an added bonus, ferrous gluconate is also a source of carbon for your plants!
Highly Concentrated Ferrous Iron: Delivers 10,000 mg/L of readily available ferrous iron for superior absorption.
Directly Bioavailable: Plants easily utilize ferrous iron gluconate without needing to expend energy on reduction.
Combats Iron Deficiency: Effectively targets and corrects chlorosis (yellowing) in new and young leaves, restoring vibrant green colour.
Effective at Any pH: Unlike ferric iron, ferrous iron remains soluble and accessible to plants across a wide pH range common in planted aquariums.
Superior to Iron-EDTA: Offers better foliar uptake due to weaker iron-gluconate bonding compared to strong iron-EDTA chelates.
Safe for Aquatic Life: Formulated to be completely safe for all plants and fish in your aquarium.
Added Carbon Source: Provides the bonus of being a source of carbon, further supporting plant health.
Promotes Lush Growth: Essential for robust chlorophyll production and overall plant vitality.
Seachem Flourish Iron™ is ideal for all freshwater planted aquarium hobbyists, especially those experiencing iron deficiency symptoms in their plants (e.g., yellowing new leaves, short/slender stems). It's the perfect supplement for maintaining vibrant, healthy, and thriving aquatic flora.
