Q: When dosing Stability®, how long should I turn off my UV filter or my ozone?

A: The UV and/or ozone should be kept off for the 7 days you are dosing if you are cycling your tank. If you are adding Stability® for new fish additions or water changes, keep them off for at least 24 hours. This is because UV and ozone break down and kill bacteria.

Q: What is a reasonable amount of time to allow the Stability™ to come out of the spore state and find a home to attach themselves?

A: The bacteria should be able to find a suitable home within 24 hours of being added to your aquarium.

Q: I just finished cycling my new tank, but I made a mistake of introducing many fishes at the same time. I was wondering if I could use Stability™ to increase the beneficial bacteria (BBs) for the increased bioload?

A: Yes, Stability™ will be very helpful in removing ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate as a result of the increased bioload. If your ammonia level is not at zero, a combination of Stability™ and AmGuard (another Seachem product) is particularly useful for reducing ammonia toxicity while the bacteria consume the waste.

Q: Why does Stability™ not need refrigeration? If there's living bacteria in the solution, how do they stay alive for so long? Or is there something else besides bacteria in the product altogether?

A: The bacteria in Stability™ are indeed alive but exist in a spore form, similar to dormant seeds. In this spore state, they can withstand extreme temperatures and do not require food to survive. When you add them to your aquarium (diluting them), they become active. Conversely, bacteria that require refrigeration are active, and refrigerating them slows their life cycle, reducing their food requirements. Active bacteria also need food (which is packaged with them) and will not survive extreme temperatures or running out of food.

Q: Can Stability™ be overdosed?

A: It is very hard to overdose Stability®. You can truly never have too much beneficial bacteria. The worst possible outcome, though rare, would be a temporary bacterial bloom in the water column, which will clear on its own.

Q: I have finished the suggested 7-day dosing, however, my tank is still not fully cycled. Why?

A: Every tank cycles differently, so an exact timeframe is difficult. However, most tanks are generally cycled within 4-6 weeks. Continued use beyond the 7 days may be beneficial until the cycle is complete.

Q: If I plan to do a fishless cycle and use Stability™, do I need to add an ammonia source to kick-start the nitrogen cycle?

A: Yes, for expedited cycling times, you will want to add a small amount of an ammonia source (such as a pinch of fish food daily) until you detect an ammonia reading. At that point, you can stop adding the food and let the bacteria run its course.
