Individual Slater: Typically ranges from 8mm – 20mm in length depending on the species (e.g., Porcellio scaber or Armadillidium vulgare).
Container Size: sold in pots of either 25 or 50 slaters with ventilated tubs containing a starter colony in damp substrate or leaf litter.
Live Slaters, also known as Woodlice or Isopods, are one of the most versatile additions to a modern vivarium. They serve a dual purpose: acting as a nutritious, calcium-rich food source and functioning as the primary "Clean-Up Crew" for bioactive setups.
Unlike many other feeder insects, slaters are terrestrial crustaceans. This means their exoskeletons are naturally packed with calcium carbonate, making them a superior nutritional choice for bone development in reptiles and eggshell production in birds. Their scurrying movement and tendency to hide under décor trigger a strong natural foraging instinct in your pets.
Key Features:
Nature's Clean-Up Crew: Slaters are detritivores; they spend their lives eating decaying leaf litter, waste, and mold, keeping your pet’s enclosure clean and bioactive.
Calcium-Rich Prey: Because they are crustaceans, they provide significantly more natural calcium than standard crickets or mealworms.
Encourages Foraging: Their habit of hiding under logs and rocks encourages reptiles and birds to stay active by "hunting" through the substrate.
Soft & Digestible: Despite their "armored" appearance, they are easily crushed and digested, making them safe for a variety of small to medium pets.
Low Maintenance: If kept in a damp, dark environment with leaf litter, a colony can sustain itself and even breed within the enclosure.
Slaters are a fantastic supplemental food or cleaning agent for:
Reptiles: Skinks, Blue-Tongued Lizards, Bearded Dragons, Geckos (especially Crested and Day Geckos), and small Monitors.
Amphibians: Dart Frogs, Toads, and Salamanders.
Birds: Softbills, Quails, and Backyard Chickens (an excellent source of protein and calcium for layers).
Bioactive Enclosures: Essential for anyone maintaining a naturalistic "live" terrarium.
Pro Tip: To establish a permanent cleaning crew, release the slaters into your enclosure under a piece of damp cork bark or a pile of leaf litter. This gives them a "safe zone" to breed so they can provide a continuous food source.
