Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL), often marketed as Calci-Worms, NutriGrubs, or Phoenix Worms, are widely considered the "superfood" of the feeder insect world. Their standout feature is an exceptionally high natural calcium content, boasting a nearly perfect 2:1 Calcium to Phosphorus ratio. This unique balance allows them to be fed as a staple without the strict necessity of calcium dusting required for most other feeder insects.
These soft-bodied grubs are not only highly nutritious but also contain Lauric Acid, a beneficial medium-chain fatty acid known for its natural antimicrobial properties that can help support your pet's immune system. Because they lack a hard chitinous exoskeleton, they are incredibly easy to digest, significantly reducing the risk of impaction in smaller or younger animals.
Key Features:
Nature’s Calcium Boost: Contains up to 20 times more calcium than standard crickets, essential for preventing Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD).
High Digestibility: Soft bodies make them ideal for pets with sensitive digestive tracts or those that struggle with "crunchy" insects.
Immune Support: Rich in Lauric Acid, which acts as a natural probiotic to help fight off harmful gut bacteria.
Low Maintenance: No feeding or watering is required; they can be stored at room temperature for up to 2 weeks or in a cool spot (10°C – 13°C) to extend their shelf life.
Natural Enrichment: The wiggling motion of the larvae is highly attractive to insectivores, stimulating their natural hunting and pecking instincts.
These nutrient-dense larvae are a premier food source for:
Reptiles: Bearded Dragons, Leopard Geckos, Chameleons, Skinks, and Monitors.
Amphibians: Axolotls, Horned (Pacman) Frogs, and Tree Frogs.
Birds: Poultry (especially laying hens for strong eggshells), Softbills, and Wild Birds.
Aquatic Pets: Turtles, Terrapins, and larger predatory Fish.
Pro Tip: If any larvae pupate into adult flies, don't throw them away! The adult Black Soldier Fly is a harmless, slow-flying insect that provides excellent "aerial" enrichment for Chameleons and Anoles.
