Our journey began in 2012, nestled in the heart of Otago, a region renowned for its pristine environment and rich agricultural heritage. Inspired by the beauty of our surroundings and the need for genuinely wholesome pet nutrition, we embarked on a mission to create pet foods that not only satisfy the taste buds but also nourish the body.

The Inspiration Behind Otago Petfoods
Our founders, Mathew & Kimberly Thom, grew up in families where pets were considered integral members. Watching their pets thrive on homemade, natural diets sparked a realization: every pet deserves access to real, unadulterated nutrition. Kim also worked as a pet groomer and was astounded at how many dogs were coming in with skin irritations and food allergies due to being fed low-quality kibbled food. This realization was the seed from which Otago Petfoods grew. With backgrounds in veterinary nursing and harvesting wild game, our founders combined their expertise to formulate pet food recipes that are both delicious and sustainable.

Our Journey
What started in a small home-based garage in Mosgiel, then out of Mudpuppy in Caversham, then to an old butchery in Green Island, has grown into a large manufacturing plant in Mosgiel, where each batch of our pet food is crafted with care. Despite our growth, our commitment to quality and nutrition has never wavered. We've expanded our range to cater to the diverse needs of pets, from life-stage-specific formulas to solutions for dietary sensitivities. Along the way, we've partnered with local farmers and suppliers who share our values, strengthening the community that supports us.
Looking Ahead
As we look to the future, our goal is to continue innovating and exploring new ways to enhance pet health through nutrition. We're excited about the road ahead, driven by our passion for pets and our dedication to making a difference in their lives. We love the fact that we can take unwanted stock and wild pests out of the environment and make something of value out of an otherwise wasted resource and we love working with other local companies that share the same vision. We hope to be able to expand on this in the future.
